Storm jobs, where a tree is already down or resting on a house or a line, do not follow the size ranges above. Calhoun County gets two kinds: summer thunderstorms with straight-line winds off the Kalamazoo side, plus the occasional derecho down I-94 that flattens trees from Augusta to Albion in one evening, and winter ice and wet snow that load every branch in Battle Creek at once.

Before You Start
Permits are the easy part in Battle Creek, MI. The tree chapter (Ch. 1026) covers public trees only, so a tree wholly on your lot needs no city permit, whatever its size. Should You DIY?
A young crabapple or volunteer box elder you can reach from the ground can be a fair Saturday job with the right tools and experience. Dead ash is the local trap: brittle within a couple of years of the borer, it snaps under a climber and can come apart as the trunk is cut.
