Ceresco, MI: Trees Along the River Road

Ceresco is an unincorporated Kalamazoo River hamlet in Calhoun County, on the line between Marshall Township and Emmett Charter Township, fourteen minutes east of Battle Creek on the old Michigan Avenue and five miles short of downtown Marshall. A sawmill and a flour mill went up here in 1838, the post office followed in 1843, and the name joins Ceres, the grain goddess, to the milling company's first two letters.

A hamlet that old has old trees: sugar maples and bur oaks by the first houses, black walnut on lot lines, and cottonwood and silver maple crowding the bank above the dam. The river loam over sand is soft in spring and easy on a grinder.
