Marshall, MI: Tree Work in the County Seat
Marshall is the Calhoun County seat, a city of about 6,800 on the Kalamazoo River where I-94 meets I-69, twenty-one minutes east of Battle Creek. Sidney Ketchum founded it in 1830 and the village incorporated in 1836. Today its historic district, with more than 850 buildings including the Honolulu House, is one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the country.
The town that saved its houses kept its trees too: sugar maples, red oaks and basswoods planted in the 1800s over slate roofs, porches and iron fences, silver maples on later blocks, dead ash on every street. A historic-district removal comes down from the top, one roped piece at a time.
