Hickory Corners, MI: Named for a Tree

Hickory Corners is a census-designated community of about 310 in Barry Township, Barry County, twenty-eight minutes northwest of Battle Creek and a mile and a half above the Kalamazoo County line. Surveyors named it in 1837 for a large hickory at the center of the section. The Reverend Moses Lawrence built on Lawrence Lake in 1834, and Solomon C. Hall put up the first house in town and became postmaster in 1844.

Today it has the Gilmore Car Museum, 90 acres and more than 400 vehicles since 1966, and MSU's Kellogg Biological Station on Gull Lake, with W.K. Kellogg's 1927 bird sanctuary. The trees are still hickory and oak on dry sand.
