Nashville, MI: Tree Work on the Thornapple
Nashville is a Barry County village of about 1,540 on the Thornapple River, thirty-six minutes north of Battle Creek and mostly in Castleton Township. The land was bought in 1836 and first platted south of the river, but the place stayed nameless until 1869, when a railroad engineer suggested honoring landowner Garaudus Nash and the governor signed the village into law that March.
Sawmills and gristmills ran on the river by 1865, and the Nashville Roller Mills later sold Red-eye flour. Mill-town trees follow: cottonwood, silver maple and willow in soft river ground, and sugar maples, bur oaks and walnuts that have outgrown older lots. It is the farthest north we go.
