Olivet is an Eaton County city of about 1,500, thirty-two minutes northeast of Battle Creek. Town and college were founded together in 1844 and named for Mount Olivet. It was a village in Walton Township until becoming a city in 1958, and the University of Olivet still anchors the center of town at about 919 feet.

A town planted for the long run has trees to match: sugar maples, red oaks, basswoods and American beeches set out along the streets and around campus in the 1800s, now huge over houses, sidewalks and service drops.
