Tekonsha, MI: Trees at the County's South End
Tekonsha is a village of about 650 in southern Tekonsha Township, Calhoun County, thirty-four minutes southeast of Battle Creek. The St. Joseph River runs east to west past the village, which sits at about 938 feet on glacial ground above it. It is the hometown of Talbert Abrams, the aviator called the father of aerial photography, and it counted just under 500 people in 1880, grew, then eased back.
That leaves more big trees than people to tend them: sugar and silver maples on the streets, black walnut and box elder on lot lines, cottonwood and willow on the river bottoms, and dead ash in every fencerow between here and Marshall.
