A Local Crew That Learned Trees on the Line
Reid Tolliver grew up in Pennfield Township, just north of Battle Creek, and spent six seasons on a storm-cleanup and line-clearance crew across Calhoun, Kalamazoo and Barry counties. That is where he learned how a silver maple's long leaders fail under wet snow, how a red oak that looks fine from the sidewalk can be hollow at the root flare, and how to take a tree apart between a house and a service drop.
The lesson that stuck: the careful way and the quick way are the same way, as long as the rigging goes up before the saw starts. In 2015 he started the company in Battle Creek, Michigan with one bucket truck and a chipper.
Today we are a crew of four on glacial ground: sandy outwash and loam, kettle lakes, and two rivers meeting downtown. We know its trees, from old street silver maples and box elders (now banned from the curb lawn) to yard oaks, river cottonwoods, farm windbreaks and borer-killed ash.
Four Services
Our whole menu is removal, stump grinding, trimming and land clearing. No mowing, no mulch beds, no landscaping, and no commercial contracts that would pull the crew away from homeowners. If what you need is not on that list, we will say so on the first call.
Our Why
Too many Calhoun County homeowners were stuck between an out-of-area outfit that shows up after a storm, quotes high and leaves the brush at the curb, and a pickup-and-chainsaw operator with no insurance or city license who drops a maple and hopes it misses the garage.
Line work showed Reid a better way: sections, rigging on every piece that could hit something, and the same care for a backyard job as for a tree in a service drop. That is this crew: small, insured, city-licensed and honest about what a tree needs.
Silver maple, oak, cottonwood and dead ash each fail their own way, and a wet spring loosens roots in sandy outwash. We read the whole tree before suggesting anything.
Reid or Tanner walks every property first, and rigging is never skipped to save an hour. Our city license binds us to Michigan's tree-trimming safety standards; we would follow them anyway.
The price is in writing before work starts. A borer-killed ash gets called what it is, and a bur oak leaning the same way for decades gets a clean bill.
We leave when the wood, brush and chips are gone and the yard looks as it did, minus the tree: no burn pile, nothing at the curb.
