Ceresco, MI: Trees Along the River Road

Ceresco is an unincorporated Kalamazoo River hamlet in Calhoun County, on the line between Marshall Township and Emmett Charter Township, fourteen minutes east of Battle Creek on the old Michigan Avenue and five miles short of downtown Marshall. A sawmill and a flour mill went up here in 1838, the post office followed in 1843, and the name joins Ceres, the grain goddess, to the milling company's first two letters.

A hamlet that old has old trees: sugar maples and bur oaks by the first houses, black walnut on lot lines, and cottonwood and silver maple crowding the bank above the dam. The river loam over sand is soft in spring and easy on a grinder.

Why a Battle Creek Crew Comes to Ceresco

What We Bring to Ceresco

Fourteen Minutes East

Ceresco is on our road to Marshall several times a week, so estimates get grouped and dated fast, and a storm call by the river gets a quick look.

Trees Above the Dam

Bank cottonwoods and silver maples grow fast in wet ground and lean over the water and the road. They come down from the dry side, never toward the river.

Old Mill-Town Hardwoods

The maples, bur oaks and walnuts planted in the mill years are now Ceresco's biggest trees. Deadwood goes first; removal comes up only if the trunk or roots have failed.

Two Townships, One Phone Call

Ceresco straddles Marshall and Emmett townships, each with its own rules. For a tree over the road we help work out which township hall to call.

Asked Around Ceresco

Is a permit required to take down a tree in Ceresco?

Not for a tree standing wholly on your own lot. Battle Creek's curb-lawn permit and forestry license stop at the city line; Ceresco answers to its own local ordinances, as noted above. Storm limbs get chipped or hauled, and outside city and village limits you check whether a burn permit is needed that day. More on our permits page.

How soon can you get to Ceresco?

A limb on the roof gets a same-day or next-day answer at (269) 555-0142. Routine jobs are usually priced within days and finished within two weeks, and after a storm Ceresco keeps its place in line.
