What Makes This Different
In Battle Creek, Michigan, clearing your own lot needs no tree permit unless a tree stands in the curb lawn or the right-of-way. The real questions are how thick the growth is and where it goes.
Local jobs come in a few shapes: a Goguac, Gull or Wall Lake lot overrun by box elder and volunteer silver maple; a half-blown pine and spruce windbreak where a pole barn is going; cottonwood and willow bottomland on the Kalamazoo or Battle Creek rivers; or the back half of an in-town lot.
In the city, debris is chip or haul: § 1610.05 bans burning brush and allows only a clean-wood fire 2 feet high and 3 across, and a bonfire needs a same-day City Clerk permit, capped at 8 feet across. Outside the city, check that day whether a DNR burn permit is required. We bring a mulching skid steer, a grapple and the chipper.

Brush, saplings and dead ash cleared to the footprint of a house, garage, pool or drive and no farther. Big hardwoods are priced per tree, stumps ground the same visit, and we say which kept oaks will survive the grading.
Lake lots opened without stripping them: volunteer box elder and maple out, the original oaks kept. Storm-broken windbreaks taken down and fence lines pushed back out of the brush. Reid grew up in Pennfield Township and knows shelterbelt roots.
Cottonwood and willow bottoms on both rivers, the brushy oak-savanna edge toward Fort Custer, or a yard where a derecho dropped several trees. One pass with mulcher and grapple beats clearing a flattened windbreak tree by tree.

Density sets the price: head-high saplings and a mature cottonwood-and-walnut woodlot are different jobs. Sandy outwash carries machines, but river bottoms and lakeshore muck stay soft. Mulching in place usually costs least, full haul-off most. A walk-through and a written estimate come first.
Forestry mulching beats hand-clearing for speed and grade. The chipper and grapple take the three-foot cottonwood trunk or the walnut log worth saving, and kept trees get full rigging care.
You learn each disposal option and its cost before the estimate is written. In Battle Creek there is no burn pile and no curb pile past 18 hours (§ 642.02), so the chipper and truck come on day one.
Mulch in place, haul it all, or keep oak, cherry and walnut for the fire pit. Nothing gets buried or left lying in the brush.
Box elder and silver maple regrow fast. Battle Creek repealed its weeds chapter, so tall growth falls under the property-maintenance code; ask Code Compliance. Ground stumps let the lot mow clean.
Not for trees wholly on your own lot. The only tree permit is the DPW's for the curb lawn or right-of-way (§ 1026.04), usually one or two trees out front. The city regulates debris and upkeep, and paid crews need the City license (§ 860.01). Our permits guide has it all.
Either. Mulching in place costs least; full haul-off leaves bare ground. In Battle Creek those are the only choices, since § 1610.05 bans brush burning and caps even a permitted bonfire at 3 by 8 feet, 50 feet from structures. Outside the city, DNR burn permits decide.
Removal is priced tree by tree. Clearing is priced by area and density: how much ground, how thick, how big the trees mixed in. Debris is its own line, and a parcel under half an acre is priced as one lot.
