Burlington is a village of about 280 on M-60 in Burlington Township, Calhoun County, thirty minutes south of Battle Creek. Platted in 1842 and incorporated in 1869, it covers under a square mile at about 935 feet, high and open.

Farm country surrounds it, so most trees here were planted on purpose: white pine and Norway spruce windbreaks on the north and west sides of farmsteads, sugar maples and bur oaks in yards, black walnut along the lanes, and ash rows the borer turned into standing firewood. In the village the silver maples are old enough to lose limbs in every summer storm. We pass through regularly on the way to Union City.
