Union City is a Branch County village of about 1,700, thirty-six minutes south of Battle Creek, with M-60 along its north edge and a sliver reaching into Calhoun County's Burlington Township. The Coldwater River joins the St. Joseph here, and the 1923 Riley Dam backs the St. Joseph into Union Lake.

Platted in 1835 and incorporated in 1866, the village was Station No. 2 on the Underground Railroad under John D. Zimmerman, whose 1840 house still stands on East High Street. Two rivers and a lake mean soft ground and cottonwood, silver maple and willow leaning over water, with sugar maples and bur oaks on older blocks and dead ash on every street.
