Albion, MI: Tree Work at the River Forks
Albion is a Calhoun County city of about 7,700, thirty-one minutes east of Battle Creek on I-94, where the north and south branches of the Kalamazoo River meet. Settlers came in 1833, the village was platted in 1835, and Albion became a city in 1885. Albion College, founded by Methodists in 1835 with first classes in 1843, enrolls about 1,250, and the Albion Malleable Iron Company made this a foundry town for most of the twentieth century.
Albion lost about a tenth of its people from 2010 to 2020, leaving trees nobody tends: century-old street maples, red oaks and basswoods by the college, cottonwoods on both branches and dead ash on nearly every block.
