Richland is a Kalamazoo County village of about 950 at the south end of Gull Lake, twenty-three minutes northwest of Battle Creek. The lake covers 2,030 acres of clear kettle water up to 110 feet deep, mostly in Kalamazoo County with its north tip in Barry. Richland was thriving by the 1830s and once vied for county seat, but with no stream for power it never industrialized, and it filled in with lake homes in the 1980s and 1990s.

The old village blocks have sugar maples and bur oaks past a century; the shore has narrow lots, steep banks, big white oaks and cottonwoods, and no room to drop anything.
