Athens is a village of about 940 in southern Athens Township, Calhoun County, twenty-six minutes south of Battle Creek. It was settled in 1831, and Nottawa Creek, called the Nottawa River on some maps, flows west through it. The population topped 1,100 in 2000 and has eased since, which leaves big trees on lots that are not always kept up.

Streets carry century-old sugar and silver maples, alleys have black walnut and box elder, and dead ash stands where the borer passed. Along the creek it is cottonwood, silver maple and willow in ground that floods each spring. Athens shares our run to Burlington and Union City.
