We grind our own stumps, so tree and stump share one visit and one price. An old stump someone else left gets a next-day estimate and a grinder that week.

A borer-killed ash cut to a stool, a sugar maple left knee-high. Red oak and black walnut stay dense for years, so we price the wood, not the age.
Sugar maple, oak and walnut grind slowly, with wide flares. Silver maple chews fast but runs oversized, roots spread under the sod. Box elder, cottonwood and dead ash often crumble. You hear which you have before the machine unloads.
A standard grind reaches 4 to 6 inches below grade, enough for seed or sod. For a fence, shed pad or drive, or to clear silver maple roots, we go deeper, priced as its own line.

Diameter sets the price, measured at the ground with the flare, so a silver maple reading 24 inches at the cut can measure 40 where the teeth work. Species and access move it too, and a stump added to our removal gets the extra-stump rate. Every job gets a free, written estimate before any work starts.
Sandy outwash and loam with no bedrock grind clean. The odd glacial cobble by a root is the catch, so we probe the flare first, and MISS DIG 811 marks utilities before every grind.
A grinder throws chips hard. We run it guarded, clear the area, and carry the coverage the City's § 860.01 license requires, on file with the City Clerk.
Diameter, species and depth are settled at the estimate. The sheet is the bill, whether it takes twenty minutes or two hours.
Below grade, backfilled, raked for seed, grindings hauled if you like. City pickup takes only tied bundles under 4 feet and 50 pounds (§ 1064.06), so chips never go to the curb.
How It Works
You can, but it seldom stays put. Silver maple, box elder and cottonwood stumps sprout; dead-ash stumps rot and draw carpenter ants; red oak and sugar maple sit hard for a decade. Our Tree Diagnosis tool covers stumps too.
Your choice. Most people have us backfill and mound them a little high, since sandy loam settles by fall. Otherwise we haul them; a chip pile at a Battle Creek curb breaks the bundle rule (§ 1064.06).
Usually, within inches of a post, walk or foundation, chip guard toward the house. Septic, gas, sprinkler and water lines get located first. A curb-lawn stump is a public tree needing a DPW permit (§ 1026.04), so that one goes to the DPW.
